Oregon’s pioneering neurodivergent middle school highlights why belonging — not compliance — is the foundation of learning
PORTLAND, Ore., [Feb 18, 2026] — In recognition of Neurodiversity Celebration Week (March 17–23), Bridges Middle School is stepping forward as a leading voice in inclusive education, reminding families, educators, and policymakers that neurodivergent students need schools designed around how their brains actually work.
“Neurodivergent kids aren’t broken. Systems are,” said Beven Byrnes, executive director of Bridges Middle School. “When kids feel safe, learning follows. And belonging it’s the foundation.”
For 27 years, Bridges Middle School has built an environment where students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, and other learning differences thrive through a model centered on small class sizes, sensory-aware classrooms, and individualized learning pathways. During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the school is spotlighting what truly inclusive middle school education looks like in practice, including:
- A 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio that allows for deep, individualized support and relationship-building.
